Laverton College P-12 is an exciting new Prep to Year 12 College that offers your child a seamless transition from the start of their schooling experience through to the completion of their secondary education.
About Us
Laverton College is a new Prep to Year 12 School formed after
Laverton Secondary College merged with two local primary schools
Laverton Plains
Primary School
and Laverton
Primary School
as part of a wider community renewal program. 2009 was the
inaugural year as a Prep-12 College on the one site.
We have an enrolment of 600 students across the college.
Around $20 million has been invested in constructing an entirely new
school on the former secondary college site. These new facilities
are designed to support the college’s three ‘learning communities’;
Prep to Year Four, Years five to Eight and Years Nine to Twelve. The
aim is to engage students more with learning and to support teachers
to adopt modern teaching methods such as team teaming and
project-based / personalised learning.
Stage 1 of the new school opened at the start of 2009 and provided
the first of the school’s four buildings designed to support its
learning communities. A new administration centre and
library/resource centre was also constructed. Stage 1 also housed
the Prep to Year Four Learning Community.
Stage 2 opened in May 2011 and comprises the Year 5-8
Learning Community and
the Year 9-12 Learning Community Science/manufacturing/arts
and design as well as a Performing Arts and Food Technology building
have also been constructed. As a part of the Building the Education
Revolution Project, the Federal Government funded the construction
of a Languages Centre which is known as our Community Support
Centre.
We look forward to the College Building Project being completed with
‘Stage 3’, will add a sport and recreational hall in future years
along with new playing and sports fields.
Open Plan Learning Spaces
The main feature of each learning community building is the single
large space where about
150 students work together throughout the day. These spaces are
flexible and allow for group as well as individual-based learning.
Each building is self contained, with toilets, lockers and staff
work areas, a reception office included and visible from the main
learning space. All students have easy access to laptops and
networked computers. Each building also has a wet area, presentation
and break-out areas and has easy access to outdoor learning areas.
The school’s design incorporates environmental features such as
rainwater tanks, acoustic paneling and building management systems
to monitor and control lights, heating and cooling.
Open Space Benefits All
Staff and students have adjusted to working in a large open plan
space. It has been a phenomenal experience to witness how the large
space has changed how we teach and how students operate in spaces at
school. We welcome members of our community to visit the school to
witness just how well students work in flexible spaces. The acoustic
panelling means less noise is generated in the open space compared
to a standard smaller classroom. Up to eight teachers normally work
in this space but this can swell to 15 adults throughout the day to
include teacher aides and other school staff. The space is designed
for team teaching and it has reduced the isolation that teachers can
feel. The students really enjoy the vibrant environment and being
able to approach different teachers for help throughout the day.
Behavioural problems have reduced and students are more engaged with
school and learning. Students describe how they enjoy working
and just being in the space and we are confident this will
contribute to overall improved student learning and personal
development.
The college continues exploring ways the new environment supports
modern teaching methods and to develop a curriculum that ensures an
individual approach to student achievement. The College offers
many programs for students to achieve their potential and we are
constantly seeking ways of enhancing what we offer.
Our College is attracting visitors from across Victoria and even
some interstate visitors. They want to see how we are catering for
21st Century learning needs of our students.
